As we spotlight to top tax scams making the rounds this year, here’s a sneaky scam that disappears just when you need answers: the ghost tax preparer.
These aren’t spirits or specters; they’re real people who prepare your return, take your money, and then vanish without a trace (or a signature).
What Is a Ghost Preparer?
In short, it’s someone who prepares tax returns for a fee but doesn’t put their name on the dotted line. Instead of signing as a paid preparer (as required by law), they leave that section blank or tell you to e-file the return yourself.
Why skip the signature? Because they don’t want the IRS to know who they are. That’s a pretty big red flag.
Why It’s a Problem
Ghost preparers often do more than just avoid responsibility, including:
- Fudge numbers to inflate your refund
- Claim credits or deductions you’re not eligible for
- Charge fees based on a percentage of your refund (a major no-no)
- Have no professional credentials—and often no intention of sticking around if something goes wrong
Once your return is filed, they disappear into the night. If the IRS later finds problems with your return, you’re the one on the hook, not the ghost who caused them.
How to Spot a Ghost Tax Preparer (Before It’s Too Late)
Keep an eye out for:
- A preparer who refuses to sign your return
- Someone who insists on paper filing, even when e-filing is easier
- Promises of a “big refund” without reviewing your financials
- Preparers who won’t give you a copy of the return
- Fees based on a percentage of your refund
The IRS requires paid tax preparers to sign returns and include their Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). No PTIN? No peace of mind.
Don’t Get Haunted by Your Return
Your best defense: work with a legitimate, transparent preparer who knows the rules and plays by them. Bonus points if they’re willing to explain things to you in plain English.
At Smith Patrick CPAs, we believe in doing things right: from the first form to the final signature. Our team signs every return we prepare and stands by our work long after filing season is over. Because tax help shouldn’t disappear when you need it most.
