Recently, a crew of Smith Patrick CPAs team members traded in calculators for cardboard boxes and volunteered with KidSmart, a St. Louis nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that every child has the tools to learn.
KidSmart provides free school supplies to teachers in under-resourced classrooms, helping students who might otherwise go without. The need is big: last year alone, KidSmart served more than 90,000 students in the region.
Taking on the Challenge
“When our team arrived, we were told the goal for the day was to pack 130 bags of books for teachers. Challenge accepted,” said Andrea Shewcraft of Smith Patrick CPAs.
With a little teamwork (and maybe some competitive spirit), our Smith Patrick volunteers—Andrea Shewcraft, Andrew Labeaume, Patty Ward, Jessica Collins, and Chelsea Calvird—rolled up their sleeves and got to work alongside a volunteer group from the Missouri Society of CPAs (MOCPA).
By the end of the day, the team didn’t just meet the goal: they crushed it, packing a whopping 330 bags of books. That’s more than double the target, and it means more teachers in our community will be able to “shop” KidSmart’s shelves to stock their classrooms with much-needed resources.
A Community Win
We’re grateful to KidSmart for the opportunity to make a difference and to MOCPA for teaming up with us on this project. It’s proof that when CPAs collaborate, numbers really do add up.
